Timebanking Initiative
Several months ago, Stephen Dubner and Andrew Yang announced a timebanking initiative, and we’re proud to announce that we’ve brought aboard Jenny Kassan, a seasoned non-profit executive, to lead the project. Furthermore, we’re excited to share that we’re basing the initiative in the heart of Baltimore. Rooted in the principles of equality, community wealth building, and mutual support, this initiative is designed to strengthen community ties and empower individuals to share their skills, talents, and time.
What Is Timebanking?
Timebanking is a system where time is the currency. For every hour you spend helping someone — whether it’s tutoring, running errands, or teaching a skill — you earn one time credit. You can then use these credits to receive help from others in the network. It’s a simple yet powerful way to build connections and foster community.
Why Baltimore?
Baltimore is a city with rich history, vibrant communities, and a deep sense of resilience. Yet, like many urban areas, it faces challenges in economic disparity, social isolation, and access to resources. This initiative aims to bridge these gaps by creating a supportive network where everyone’s time and contributions are equally valued.
Meet The Mulberry
At the heart of this effort is The Mulberry, a clubhouse and community living room where community comes to life. The Mulberry will be home to:
Wellness Events: Attend yoga classes, meditation sessions, and health workshops.
Potlucks: Share meals and stories with neighbors.
Language Classes: Learn and teach new languages to bridge cultural divides.
Skill-Sharing Workshops: Discover new hobbies and refine your talents.
Local Business Pop-Ups: Support Baltimore’s entrepreneurs and creators, with a focus on access to “right-fit” capital.
Cross-Class Friendships: Build bonds that transcend economic and social boundaries.
A timebanking initiative thrives when it has strong local roots, and The Mulberry will provide exactly that. By grounding the timebank within a physical space, we ensure that it reflects the unique culture, values, and needs of Baltimore’s communities. This local focus fosters trust, accountability, and a sense of belonging among participants, making the timebank more impactful and sustainable.
Join the Movement
Soon, we’ll be launching a crowdfunding campaign to bring this vision to life. Your contributions will help:
Establish The Mulberry as a thriving community hub.
Build the infrastructure for the timebanking platform.
Host events and workshops that bring neighbors together.
There will be opportunities to both make tax-deductible contributions to the nonprofit, Community Ventures, and to invest in the building, with the potential for a return on your investment.
Every dollar donated or invested supports a project that fosters community, empowers individuals, and creates a more connected Baltimore.
